How braces work and common options

Braces use brackets attached to your teeth and a connecting wire to guide tooth movement. Some treatment plans also use elastics or other appliances to help address the way the upper and lower teeth fit together.

Metal braces

Metal braces are fixed to your teeth during active treatment. They use brackets and wires to address a range of tooth-position and bite concerns. Your orthodontist adjusts the appliances as treatment progresses. Dr. Burton will explain the movements your plan is intended to achieve and how appointments and home care support that plan.

Clear ceramic braces

Ceramic brackets have a tooth-colored or clear appearance. They are fixed to the teeth, like metal braces. Ask whether ceramic brackets are appropriate for your bite and how their care and cost compare with your other options.

Comparing braces with clear aligners

Braces remain attached to your teeth; clear aligners are removable trays. Aligners require consistent daily wear, while braces require cleaning around brackets and wires and avoiding foods that can damage them. Your bite, treatment goals and daily routine all matter when choosing an approach.

What happens during braces treatment?

  1. Discuss your concerns. At your consultation, talk about your smile, bite and priorities. Dr. Burton will assess whether treatment is recommended and explain your options.
  2. Understand the plan. Ask about the proposed appliances, estimated timing, fees and any records or dental care needed before starting.
  3. Begin treatment and attend checkups. Your braces are placed, and follow-up visits allow your orthodontist to assess progress and make adjustments. Your appointment schedule will depend on your plan.
  4. Plan for retainers. After active treatment, retainers help maintain the new tooth positions. Follow the wear and care instructions provided for your retainer.

How much do braces cost?

Orthodontic fees can vary with the type, complexity and length of treatment. At SmileMaker, pricing is based on your individual needs and plan. A useful estimate explains both the total cost and what is included.

Before deciding, ask:

  • Does the estimate include diagnostic records, treatment visits and the first retainers?
  • Could repairs, replacement retainers or other services have separate fees?
  • What payment options are available, and when are payments due?
  • Does my insurance include orthodontic benefits, and what would I be responsible for?

Our team will discuss pricing and available payment options before treatment begins. Insurance benefits vary by plan; bring your information so the team can review your orthodontic benefits with you.

Everyday life with braces

Make time to clean around brackets and wires and between your teeth. Ask our team to demonstrate the tools and technique that suit your appliance. Continue seeing your general dentist for your regular dental care.

Hard and sticky foods can damage braces. Follow the food guidance provided for your treatment, and contact our team if a bracket becomes loose or a wire needs attention. Ask about a suitable mouthguard if you play sports.

Braces questions, answered

How long will I need braces?

There is no single timeline for every patient. The tooth movements needed and the complexity of your bite affect the estimate. Keeping appointments, caring for your braces and following instructions are important throughout treatment. Ask Dr. Burton what could change your expected finish date.

Can adults get braces?

Yes, adults can be assessed for orthodontic treatment. Your examination will help determine which options suit your teeth, gums and bite. Tell Dr. Burton about existing dental work and any concerns you have about treatment.

When should my child first see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first checkup no later than age 7, or sooner if a problem is noticed. An evaluation can help identify concerns while the teeth and jaws are developing. Some children benefit from early care; others may need monitoring or no treatment.

Will braces hurt?

Teeth can feel sore when braces are first placed or adjusted. Tell our team if discomfort concerns you or a bracket or wire is irritating your mouth so we can advise you about your situation.

Will I need a retainer afterward?

Yes. Teeth can change position after treatment, and retainers help limit that movement. Dr. Burton will recommend a retainer and wear schedule for you. Ask how follow-up care and any future replacement fees are handled.
