Orthodontic Emergency Information

For trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding or a serious facial injury, seek emergency medical care immediately. A knocked-out permanent tooth needs urgent dental care. Contact our orthodontic team after urgent care has been arranged.

What to do in case of an orthodontic emergency

Call our office 615-865-6551 as soon as possible if you break or loosen any of your appliances. Please do not come directly to the office – by calling us, you will allow us to create a time to see you. Even if you have a regular appointment scheduled, call us immediately to notify us if you need an appliance repaired.

Loose brackets, bands or poking wires

Call 615-865-6551 for advice and to arrange a repair if needed. Orthodontic wax can cover an irritating area temporarily. A clean cotton swab may help gently move a poking wire toward the tooth; stop if it will not move comfortably. Do not force or remove an appliance. Ask our team before attempting to cut a wire.

Lost separators

Most patients lose a separator during their treatment. Do not worry about losing a separator, but call our office to see if it needs to be replaced.

Discomfort with Orthodontic Treatment

During the first week after your braces are in place and routine adjustments are complete, you will likely feel some pain, soreness or discomfort. Ask your dentist, physician or pharmacist which pain medicine is suitable for you, and follow its label or your clinician’s instructions. A warm wash cloth or heating pad may reduce the soreness in your jaws.
