How Braces Work

How Braces Work

Braces apply controlled forces to move teeth gradually. The ligament and bone around each tooth respond to those forces: bone is removed in areas of compression and formed in areas of tension. Your orthodontist plans the direction and amount of movement and checks your response during treatment.

Now you know How Braces Work!

Treatment time depends on the tooth movements needed, oral health and how treatment progresses. Age alone does not determine the schedule. Dr. Burton will explain your estimated timing after evaluating your needs.

Brackets attach to teeth and hold the archwire; bands may be used on selected teeth. The wire and other parts of the appliance work together to guide movement.

Your orthodontist selects and adjusts the wires according to the treatment plan. There is no single wire sequence or arch shape that suits everyone.

Some plans use elastics to add force in specific directions. If prescribed, wear and replace them exactly as instructed. Do not change their placement or strength yourself.

Ask what could affect your timeline and how progress will be reviewed. Learn about braces treatment at SmileMaker before your consultation.
