How intraoral scanning supports orthodontic planning
An intraoral scanner records the visible surfaces of your teeth to create a digital model. At SmileMaker, Dr. Burton uses these records as part of orthodontic planning. The model helps the team examine tooth positions and plan appliances; it does not replace your clinical examination or other records that may be needed.
What to expect during a scan
A team member moves a small scanning tip around your teeth while a digital model appears on screen. For records that can be captured this way, a scan can replace an impression made with tray material. Tell the team if you have a strong gag reflex or need a pause. The appropriate recording method depends on your needs.
How the model is used
The team checks the model and may capture an area again if more detail is needed. Depending on the treatment plan, digital records can be used in designing appliances or producing models. Scanning does not by itself determine how many visits you will need or how quickly your teeth will move.
